We are thrilled to announce two new event distances at Race to the King.
Since 2016, Race to the King has welcomed runners to the heart of South Downs National Park, showcasing its iconic chalk landscapes and ancient historical sites.
Originally a 52-mile double marathon, in 2022 we made the decision to bring the distances on offer at the event into alignment with the 50km & 100km options at Race to the Stones, modifying the route in the process.
Since then, the race has steadily grown in popularity thanks to the variety of options on offer.
The flat, scenic Coastal 50k is the ideal first ultra:
The more challenging Castle 50k is a good ‘next step’ for runners seeking more of a challenge:
And, for the ultimate challenge, the 100k route consists of both loops back-to-back:
In 2026, we’re adding to this variety with the introduction of two new distances at Race to the King – the 30km Monarch’s Loop, and an 80km (50-mile) option as well.
Monarch’s Loop 30k
Sharing a start and finish with the Castle 50k, the Monarch’s Loop 30k heads out from basecamp at West Dean Gardens towards Bignor Hill via the South Downs Way.
From there, it joins the Monarch’s Way via Stane Street, an ancient Roman road (now trail) which historically connected London with Chichester. Winding through forests and scenic Downland terrain, the route then finishes with a glorious few miles through the West Dean estate.
The Monarch’s Loop 30k will offer runners and walkers who do not want to take on an ultra-distance challenge the chance to experience the magic of the South Downs National Park, with all the benefits of doing so as part of an organised event, including:
- A fully waymarked course
- Well-stocked pitstops
- Medical support
- Hot food at the finish line
- A medal to recognise your achievement
80k Non-Stop
Consisting of the Coastal 50k and the Monarch’s Loop 30k, our new 80k Non-Stop option provides the perfect ‘stepping stone’ for runners and walkers looking to make the jump up from the 50k distance who aren’t yet ready to tackle a full 100k.
